How to play with your preemie (while in the NICU)

Tips on How to Play With A Preemie

There are ways to encourage, support and bond with your baby while she’s in the NICU.

At first, you may feel scared and confused. Ask questions and get to know your baby’s team. They want to help you feel confident and calm. Your baby’s nurse and doctors will let you know what time of day and for how long your baby can manage interactions.

When your baby is developmentally and medically ready, you can sing, read, and talk with him. Research has shown that the more exposure to a parent’s voice, the higher cognitive and language scores NICU babies achieve.

Read your favorite children's books to your baby. Research has shown that parents who read to their infants in the NICU feel closer to their babies and are more likely to read to them once home.

Check with the doctor or nurses to figure out how much and what type of touch is best.

Kangaroo care means holding a NICU baby skin-to-skin against a parent’s chest. There are many benefits for babies and parents, once they are well enough to tolerate this.

Your baby knows your voice, so talk away because she’s listening, even if it’s not obvious to you.

As you watch your baby, you’ll soon be able to tell when he’s stressed versus relaxed. Even the tiniest baby has subtle behaviors which will help you know when he’s hungry, tired, overstimulated, relaxed, or calm. Take advantage of the experts to learn your baby’s cues.

You may feel overwhelmed and uncertain at first—this is completely normal. But while these are new challenges, you can bond and support your sweet baby.

Remember, there are many healthcare professionals who can help you understand and interact with your tiny baby.
