Why Do Babies Get Hiccups?

Hiccups are common in babies under a year.

In fact, babies hiccup in the womb. They’re caused by spasms of a baby’s tiny diaphragm, which is the large muscle that runs along the bottom of the rib cage and goes up and down as we breathe. Hiccups don’t have any useful purpose and are almost always innocent in young babies.

Sucking on a breast or bottle will often stop hiccups.

Should I be worried?

If your baby’s hiccups are unstoppable, frequent to the point of interfering with activities, or occur often after age 1, It’s best to chat about this with your healthcare provider.
