When Do Babies Learn To RollOver?

Decades ago, we used to say that babies roll over around 4 months. That’s when a baby slept on her tummy. Now that babies sleep on their back, rolling over generally happens around 6 or 7 months (and often earlier). ⁣

Rolling Over Is A Cool Trick

⁣Most babies are surprised when they first tumble over and may actually be scared. The quick change in position soon becomes a cool trick and babies will practice this over and over. ⁣

A word of caution. You never know when your baby is going to roll over for the first time. So please never leave your baby unattended on an elevated surface. Also, stop swaddling early as rolling over when swaddled increases the risks of SIDS. You can transition to a sleep sack at this point. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents should wean swaddling when infants start to roll (which may happen as early as 2-3 months).⁣
